Pushing the Frame: Willful Transgressions
March 8, 2026 — April 26, 2026
Born in Sydney, Australia, and based in New York City, Soraya Zaman (they/them) is a visual artist whose practice bridges photography, mixed media, and sculpture. Zaman’s art practice explores identity beyond the binary through intimate portraiture, still life, and experimentation throughout the photographic mediums. Their critically acclaimed series, American Boys (published by Daylight Books in 2019), documents the lives of trans-masculine individuals across the United States. The project was exhibited at Melbourne’s Fed Square in 2022 and has been added to the permanent collection of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. Recently, Zaman has created a new body of work through the SoMad artist residency in New York City, culminating in a series of “sculptural photographs” that subvert the conventions of still life photography to entangle preservation with decay.
