[Dis]assembling I
Charred wood and metal
2’ x 11.5’
1 of 1
An act of undoing, doing, and redoing; disassembling, assembling, and reassembling of raw material.
.
This piece was made very quickly, though premeditated as much as possible. Once the fire was burning, my Dad and I scorched both sides of the planks of wood. Dipping it in water to put out the fire and leaving to cool overnight for me to begin assembling the following day.
.
I learned a lot about adhesives and molecules - and how they really need each other to stick together.

The second section from the top gave way, and the rest of the piece joined the pile on the floor. The intention behind [Dis]assembling I is committed to a state of action. It is a piece of undoing, doing, and redoing. As the humid air blooms in spring, the wood stretches and breathes; the molecules expand to hold moisture; the integrity loosens, and the elasticity slackens. The charred wood is at a stage of deconstruction, and will continue the act of which it was meant to do: breakdown, melt, decompose, erode, disintegrate, crumble, deteriorate. [Dis]assembling I has completed itself.
