Annabel Turrado
Raspado (Abolir ICE), 2021

Four minute looping video of 210 minute performance

For the duration of 210 minutes, the artist scrapes away at a 50lb block of ice using a raspador, a tool used to make Mexican style snow cones, called raspados. This is the artist’s literal translation of abolishing ICE, the system that has affected many Latinx communities. Performed in response to the inhumane actions ICE has carried out on people, especially children, this piece has been staged in a variety of contexts, including the US-Mexico border crossing in Mexicali, Mexico as part of the 2023 MexiCali Biennial.
