Nyasia P. R. (they/them) is a Black artist creating photographs in Petersburg, Virginia, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Their art practice involves a range of film formats, including 35mm, medium format, and large format photography. Their body of work employs self-portraiture to visualize their environment, and their images show viewers the camera’s perspective of them; what they allow the camera to see. Beginning with the inherently powerful act of turning the camera on themself, they approach each photographic composition with the detail and sensibility of a painting. With a keen eye for the trees, the bushes, the rocks, the leaves, they create an image and place themself within it–putting their body in between it all. With the world positioned in relation to their body, their photographs invoke questions around the Black body and how it moves, where it can be and where it will go. Each portrait creates its own universe, drawing the viewer into an atmosphere of intricate compositions and irregular movements, where Nyasia confronts them directly, inhabiting a range of characters and personas.
