Pushing the Frame: Willful Transgressions
March 8, 2026 — April 26, 2026

Maria Gonzalez (b. 1970) is a Mexican painter born in the state of Oaxaca. Her recent works are made with recycled materials found on the streets of Bushwick, which she brings to life with vibrant colors. She is a self-taught artist, although many years ago she took a short course at the Brentwood Art Center in Santa Monica, CA, where she had the opportunity to sell her first two pieces. Due to unforeseen circumstances, she couldn’t continue there, putting her desire to paint on hold for almost a lifetime. Now, she has rediscovered her passion for it. She is very influenced by the folk culture of her home state. She is a fervent admirer of the life and work of Frida Kahlo and of the “Alebrijes,” folk art sculptures of animals whose bodies burst with life and color, drawing inspiration from them in her recent work.
