Gustavo Lopes is a Brazilian-born photographer and visual artist based in Brooklyn. After receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and working as a fashion photographer in Brazil, Gustavo has spent the past decade creating visual work that documents and advocates for NYC’s LGBTQ+ community on film.
Gustavo is the creator of Riis is Burning, a zine featuring 40 images of queer BIPOC shot on film at Riis Beach in NYC. In collaboration with Westland + Gallery, Gustavo has continued his work with two exhibitions: Corpos (2022) and Undocumented (2023), the latter exploring his experience as an undocumented immigrant in the USA. In 2024, Gustavo made his 16mm debut with the short film Catarina at Mono XVIII, the 18th Biennial Festival of Cinema Arts by Mono No Aware.
